Why Hypotheticals?

The name Unnecessary Hypotheticals comes from a conversation I had with my partner. We were joking around, making up wild stories about all the crazy “what-ifs” that could happen. It was lighthearted, playful—just two people imagining the most bizarre scenarios. But as we laughed, I realized how powerful those hypothetical conversations can be.

In therapy, we often explore the “what-ifs” of life—what could happen if you took that leap, if you allowed yourself to feel vulnerable, if you broke free of the constraints of past patterns. Hypotheticals give us the freedom to explore new possibilities without the pressure of outcomes. They’re a tool for digging deeper, reflecting on choices, and sometimes just lightening the mood. So, why not bring that playful curiosity into a therapeutic space?

Just like we imagined outlandish stories in that conversation, we can use “unnecessary hypotheticals” to question, explore, and reimagine our relationships, desires, and identities. It’s about having fun with the process of discovery while embracing the complexity of the human experience.
